When will Rio be available for sale? New Kia Rio - first Russian test

In 2017, the domestic market was shocked by the release of two new models from the popular brands Kia and Hyundai. Rio and Solaris have earned the love of many car enthusiasts because of their relatively low cost, good equipment and excellent driving characteristics.

Kia Rio, starting from the first series, won fame and systematically consolidated its position as a high-quality B class vehicle, but Rio 2017 is a different car that has undergone many changes and is as close as possible to the C class.

New body for 2017 model

In pursuit of improving many characteristics, the engineers of the new Kia Rio 2017 lengthened the car by three centimeters and increased its wheelbase. The new body is significantly different from its predecessor.

Now the car resembles the car of the future and will certainly appeal to lovers of bold decisions. The vehicle's license plate has moved down and created some void between the taillights, giving the new Kia Rio a certain charm.

Among the other differences that the new 2017 model has, we can highlight:

  • slightly slanted lights;
  • extended line of the front hood;
  • a more accurate and compact cut of the trunk;
  • the appearance of boomerangs of reflectors.

There are two body options in the 2017 Kia Rio model - a sedan and a hatchback. The company decided not to produce a station wagon and gave preference to the more popular body types of this car model.

The 2017 Kia Rio received seven color options, four of which were never seen before. In more affordable versions of the car, engineers installed simple fifteen-inch stamped wheels.

Fans of alloy wheels can pay attention to the top-end configurations, which feature fifteen- and sixteen-inch alloys. According to reviews from real owners, fifteen-inch wheels are preferable.

So, large rims look beautiful, but more compact wheels hold the road much better and respond to the driver’s commands.

Innovations in the cabin

The contours and geometry of the interior have not undergone any significant changes in the new Rio 2017 model. Unfortunately, Kia decided that the leather visor in the Rio was not needed and removed it in the 2017 model.

The multimedia capabilities of the new car are presented:

  • radio preparation in the cheapest configuration;
  • a simple radio with a monochrome display in the basic set;
  • a high-quality touch screen system in a top-end car.

The surcharge for the best multimedia system is about three hundred thousand rubles. The top-end radio has a great screen, a responsive touch screen and lightning-fast response to button presses.

The monochrome model of the player, available in the basic configurations, is also quite good. If navigation is not required, then choosing a simple radio would be preferable.

Not far from the radio in the Kia Rio 2017 cabin there is a control unit for air conditioning or climate control.

If you purchase a more expensive model with climate control, drivers will have access to:

  • heated all windows;
  • heated wipers.

A little lower, under the air conditioning unit, there are USB, AUX connectors and two 12-volt sockets.

The Kia Rio hatchback will delight buyers with a contrasting dashboard. Compared to models of previous generations, the size of the on-board computer screen has increased and its functionality has expanded.

In terms of finishing materials for the torpedo, the manufacturer decided not to experiment and left the same wear-resistant plastic.

The seat adjustment in both the sedan and hatchback modifications remained unchanged.

In the basic configurations of the car, steering wheel adjustment is available only along one axis, while top configurations expand this functionality and allow fine tuning of the steering column, both horizontally and vertically.

According to information from the manufacturer, the driver's seat position has become lower by two and a half centimeters. This is done so that the car owner can better feel the controls and react faster to emergency situations.

The roof change deserves special mention. The changes made to the design made it possible to reduce the blind spot by thirty centimeters and increase the viewing angle by four degrees.

The upholstery in the new car model has also not undergone significant changes. In basic versions, the seats are trimmed with a special wear-resistant fabric, and in the premium version of the car, the trim is made using eco-leather.

The latter option is far from ideal for hot days, but it is much more practical than fabric.

In general, unlike the body, the car's interior has undergone minor changes and remains a model for cars in this price range.

The length of the car increased by three centimeters, which entailed an increase in space for rear seat passengers. Now people with a height of one meter eighty will not push the back of the front seats with their knees, but will be able to feel very comfortable in the back seat.

The new Kia car model is available in the following colors:

  • red, the official name of the color is Fiery Red;
  • white or Crystal White;
  • brown – the manufacturer assigned this color the designation Siena Brown;
  • gray or Urban Grey;
  • dark gray or Ice Wine;
  • silvery The official name of the color shade is Sleek Silver;
  • black or Phantom Black;
  • orange or Sunset Orange;
  • blue – the official name of Marina Blue.

Key characteristics of Kia Rio 2017

The new Kia Rio 2017 has received some design changes to the suspension and other chassis components. Thus, the manufacturer positioned the rear suspension shock absorbers almost vertically.

In addition, Kia engineers changed the size of the washer fluid reservoir from four to approximately four and a half liters. The ground clearance of the updated Kia is 160 millimeters.

The car's suspension tuning differs from its competitors. For example, when driving a Hyundai Solaris, the driver will literally fly over small potholes and imperfections in the road surface.

In the case of a Kia, the person driving will clearly feel all the defects in the asphalt surface due to stiffer shock absorber springs.

The steering characteristics have changed slightly. It became much easier to rotate it. The Kia sedan trunk volume, as before, is 480 liters.

Technical characteristics of the 2017 Kia Rio include two types of engine:

  1. 6 liter with a power of 123 horsepower and acceleration to one hundred kilometers in 10.3 seconds.
  2. 4 liter with a power of 100 horses and acceleration to one hundred in 11.2 seconds.

Both engines have variable intake tract geometry and phase shifters. Despite the constant improvements to the engines, they can still operate on 92 grade gasoline. The overall dimensions and capacity of the fuel tank have undergone changes.

Now drivers can fill the car with fifty liters of gasoline, instead of forty-three in previous generations of Kia Rio.

As before, in more expensive versions of the car it is possible to install special Keyless Entry handles. This feature will prevent car owners from having to take the key out of their pocket. You just need to approach the car and the door locks will open themselves.

The disadvantages of the new model include poor sound insulation and vibration loading. The increased dimensions and a large number of highly durable metals in the body have led to the fact that road noise is clearly audible when driving, and small bumps cause noticeable vibration of the steering ring.

Fuel consumption indicator

The fuel consumption of the 2017 Kia Rio has remained virtually unchanged.

Objective indicators of fuel consumption are as follows:

  1. Urban cycle.
    Consumption is 7.2 liters for the 1.4 liter engine and 8.5 liters for the 1.6 liter engine when using a manual gearbox. The same figures for the automatic are 8 and 8.9 liters, respectively.
  2. Traffic outside the city.
    In this mode, a car with a junior engine and manual transmission consumes 4.8 liters per hundred kilometers, and with a senior engine – 5.1 liters. An automatic gearbox increases the figures to 4.8 and 5.3 liters per hundred kilometers of the vehicle.
  3. Combined cycle.
    When driving in combined mode, the performance of the younger engine is 5.7 for a manual transmission and 6.4 for an automatic transmission. The older engine in these conditions consumes 6 and 6.1 liters, respectively.

The difference between the modes is approximately half a liter of fuel. This outcome can be explained by the fact that the car has become one hundred kilograms heavier compared to the previous generation. In addition, increasing the wheelbase and adding new type options could also have a minor effect on fuel consumption.

Comparison of the car with direct competitors

The main competitors of the 2017 Kia Rio are:

Before the appearance of the restyled Rio model, it was Solaris that occupied the status of the most sophisticated car.

The key disadvantages of this car before Rio are: the lack of a leather interior in the maximum configuration, poor sound insulation and the high cost of the top modification.

The minimum cost of a car equipped with a 1.4 liter engine is six hundred twenty-five thousand Russian rubles, and for the maximum set you will have to pay more than a million.

Volkswagen Polo

Volkswagen has a confident leadership in the price category up to seven hundred thousand rubles due to excellent handling, ergonomics and a high level of comfort for the driver.

In its maximum configuration, the Polo will delight car enthusiasts with a powerful 125 horsepower turbocharged engine and a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The basic configuration with a ninety-horsepower engine will cost potential buyers six hundred thousand rubles.

Lada Vesta

The domestic automobile giant offers the minimum configuration of a flagship sedan for five hundred and fifty thousand rubles. For this relatively low price, buyers can count on a 1.6-liter engine with 106 horsepower and a five-speed gearbox.

The maximum configuration of the Lada Vesta will cost motorists seven hundred and forty thousand rubles and will delight you with the presence of cruise control, a navigation system and control of climate conditions in the cabin.

Thanks to its key features, the Kia Rio car can successfully compete with both the German manufacturer and the domestic auto industry. Compared to its main competitors, the car from the Korean concern looks more modern and stands out with unusual headlights.

While the giants of European automobile production are reluctant to make cosmetic changes to the bodies of their cars, the Koreans are at the forefront of fashion trends and supply designer masterpieces to the car market.

Comparison of Kia Rio 2017 car configurations

One of the most noticeable and significant features of more expensive trim levels is the presence of LED lamps. Such light indicators have excellent contrast and a distributed light beam.

In conventional configurations, simple incandescent lamps are installed in the headlights and side signals.

The basic equipment of the Kia Rio car boasts:

  • air conditioning;
  • driver's seat with height adjustment;
  • electric front windows;
  • electric power steering;
  • the presence of all modern security systems, including ABS and ERA-GLONASS;
  • steering column with adjustment along the vertical axis;
  • triple activation of the direction indicators.

The prestige and premium configurations in the 2017 and 2018 Kia Rio, in contrast to the base one, include:

  • updated instrument panel;
  • improved on-board computer;
  • new steering wheel with leather trim.
  • Handheld multimedia buttons for controlling the radio, on-board computer and connected Bluetooth device.
  • Wide display to show user information.

Kia Rio 2017 in initial trim levels with a 1.4-liter engine cannot boast of having a heating package due to a weaker generator. Airbags for the driver and front passenger are installed in all versions of the car.

Key features of top trims

Kia Rio 2017, like previous modifications, offers a huge amount of equipment in advanced trim levels.

Thus, the Kia Rio hatchback in the premium and prestige configuration can offer the driver a full power package, improved instrumentation and a full heating package. The latter includes heated front seats, heated side mirrors and heated wiper rest areas.

In addition, compared to the initial trim levels, expensive versions of the car can boast:

  1. On-board airbags.
  2. Curtains for the windows.
  3. Headrest for the third passenger in the rear seat.
  4. Full climate control.
  5. LED lights.
  6. Front LED lights with lenses.
  7. Wheels made of light alloy metals.
  8. Chromed radiator grille.
  9. Chrome door handles.
  10. A full-fledged radio with CarPlay mode, navigation, USB and Bluetooth.

Premium car configurations offer the driver a lot of additional benefits for a significant surcharge.

Thus, for the cheapest modification of the Kia Rio 2017 you will have to pay 505,000 rubles, and for the premium package you will have to say goodbye to 815,000 rubles. Therefore, you might wonder whether the bells and whistles are worth as much as three hundred thousand rubles.

Conclusion

The updated Kia Rio 2017 model largely inherited the advantages of previous models and introduced a stylish design to the series. The car has high-speed qualities, rich basic equipment and a stiff suspension.

After the transition to Euro 5, Rio became less fast, but much more environmentally friendly. The car has already firmly occupied its niche and, despite the presence of good competitors, is in incredible demand on the Russian market.

What will happen in 2019: expensive cars and disputes with the government

Due to the increase in VAT and the unclear future of state support programs for the car market, new cars will continue to rise in price in 2019. We found out how car companies will negotiate with the government and what new products they will bring.

However, this state of affairs only stimulated buyers to make decisions more quickly, and an additional argument was the planned increase in VAT from 18 to 20% in 2019. Leading auto companies told Autonews.ru what challenges the industry faces in 2019.

Figures: sales have been growing for 19 months in a row

Based on the results of sales of new cars in November 2018, the Russian car market showed an increase of 10% - thus, the market has continued to grow for 19 months in a row. According to the Association of European Businesses (AEB), 167,494 new cars were sold in Russia in November, and in total from January to November, automakers sold 1,625,351 cars - 13.7% more than last year.

According to AEB, December sales results should be comparable to November. And at the end of the whole year, it is expected that the market will reach the figure of 1.8 million sold passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, which will mean a 13 percent plus.

The most noticeable growth in 2018, according to data from January to November, was sales of Lada (324,797 units, +16%), Kia (209,503, +24%), Hyundai (163,194, +14%), VW (94,877, + 20%), Toyota (96,226, +15%), Skoda (73,275, +30%). Mitsubishi began to regain lost positions in Russia (39,859 units, +93%). Despite the growth, Subaru (7026 units, +33%) and Suzuki (5303, +26%) noticeably lagged behind the brand.

Sales increased at BMW (32,512 units, +19%), Mazda (28,043, +23%), Volvo (6,854, + 16%). Hyundai's premium sub-brand, Genesis, took off (1,626 units, 76%). Stable performance in Renault (128,965, +6%), Nissan (67,501, +8%), Ford (47,488, +6%), Mercedes-Benz (34,426, +2%), Lexus (21,831, +4%) and Land Rover (8,801, +9%).

Despite the positive figures, the overall volumes of the Russian market remain low. According to the Autostat agency, the market historically showed its maximum value in 2012 - then 2.8 million cars were sold; in 2013, sales decreased to 2.6 million. In 2014, the crisis came only towards the end of the year, so there was no dramatic drop in the market - Russians managed to buy 2.3 million cars at the “old” prices. But in 2015, sales collapsed to 1.5 million units. Negative dynamics continued in 2016, when sales dropped to a record low of 1.3 million vehicles. A revival in demand occurred only in 2017, when Russians bought 1.51 million new cars. Thus, the Russian automotive industry is still far from reaching the initial figures, as well as from the status of the first market in Europe in terms of sales, which was predicted for Russia in the pre-crisis years.

Representatives of auto companies surveyed by Autonews.ru believe that sales volumes in 2019 will be comparable to the results of 2018: according to their estimates, Russians will buy the same number of cars or a little less. Most expect a bad January and February, after which sales will pick up again. However, auto brands refuse to make official forecasts until the beginning of the new year.

“In 2019, the cars purchased in the pre-crisis year of 2014 will already be five years old - for Russians this is a kind of psychological mark at which they are ready to think about replacing the car,” Kia Marketing Director Valery Tarakanov noted in an interview with Autonews.ru.

Prices: cars have been rising in price all year

New cars in Russia after the 2014 crisis increased in price by an average of 66% by November 2018, according to Autostat. Over the 11 months of 2018, cars became more expensive on average by 12%. The agency's experts came to the conclusion that auto companies have now practically won back the fall of the ruble against world currencies. But they stipulate that this does not mean a price freeze.

Further increases in car prices will be driven by inflation and an increase in the VAT rate from the beginning of 2019 - from 18% to 20%. Representatives of auto companies, in conversations with an Autonews.ru correspondent, also do not hide that the increase in VAT will directly affect the cost of cars, and from the very beginning of 2019 - this, for example, was confirmed by Renault, AvtoVAZ and Kia.

Discounts, bonuses and new prices: when is the best time to buy a car?

“As we head into the last quarter of the year, the Russian automobile market continued to demonstrate strong growth. However, this welcome development comes as no surprise given the tailwind in the sails of the entire retail sector as it counts down to the VAT change. There has been growing concern among market participants regarding the sustainability of retail demand since January 2019,” explained Jörg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee.

At the same time, automakers hope that the ruble exchange rate will not change much against foreign currencies, which will avoid price surges.

State support programs: they gave half as much

In 2018, half as much money was allocated for state support programs for the car market, popular among Russians, compared to 2017 - 34.4 billion rubles. instead of the previous 62.3 billion rubles. At the same time, only 7.5 billion rubles were spent on targeted programs aimed specifically at motorists. We are talking about programs such as “First Car” and “Family Car”, which apply to cars costing up to 1.5 million rubles.

The rest of the money went to more specific programs like “Own Business” and “Russian Tractor”. 1.295 billion was spent on measures to develop and produce vehicles with remote and autonomous control, 1.5 billion was spent on stimulating the acquisition of ground-based electric transport, and 0.5 billion was spent on measures to stimulate production in the Far East (we are talking about compensation for transportation costs to auto companies). billion rubles, for the purchase of gas engine equipment - 2.5 billion rubles.

Thus, the government, as promised, continues to systematically reduce the volume of state support for the industry. For comparison: in 2014, only 10 billion rubles. went to recycling and trade-in programs.

In 2015, 43 billion rubles were allocated to support the automotive industry, of which 30% was also spent on recycling and trade-in. In 2016, spending on state support for the automotive industry reached 50 billion rubles, half of which was also spent on similar targeted programs.

As for 2019, the situation with state support remains. Thus, in the middle of the year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced that the “First Car” and “Family Car” programs were extended until 2020 inclusive. They should allow you to buy new cars at a 10-25% discount. However, automakers claim that they have still not received any confirmation about the extension of the programs - the Ministry of Industry and Trade for a month was unable to clarify the situation and respond to Autonews.ru’s request.

Meanwhile, at a recent meeting with automakers, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak said that the volume of state support for the domestic automotive industry is five times higher than the budget revenues from this industry.

“Now this amounts to 9 rubles per 1 ruble of income to the budget system from the automobile industry. This is with the recycling fee, and without the recycling fee - 5 rubles of state support,” he said.

Kozak explained that these figures should make one think about the conditions under which state support measures should be provided to the auto industry, adding that the vast majority of business sectors do not receive any support from the state at all.

In 2018, disputes between auto companies and the government over the terms of further work in the market intensified.

The reason was the expiring terms of the agreement on industrial assembly, which gave auto companies that invested in the localization of production a tangible set of benefits, including tax ones. This situation primarily means that manufacturers, in conditions of uncertainty, can postpone the launch of new models, which, by the way, was threatened by Renault. In addition, it is more difficult for companies to predict their pricing policy. At the moment, the government, represented by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Energy, has still not been able to develop a unified strategy.

Until recently, departments offered different tools to replace the expiring decree on industrial assembly No. 166. Thus, the Ministry of Industry and Trade actively lobbied for the signing of individual special investment contracts (SPICs) between the government and auto companies. The document provides for a certain set of benefits, which is determined separately with each signatory depending on the size of investments, including in R&D and export development. This tool has been repeatedly criticized by auto company executives for its lack of transparency and too stringent requirements for further investment.

The Ministry of Energy, in turn, opposed it for a long time and insisted that only those who produce high-tech products, which do not include cars, will be able to work under SPICs. The FAS also joined the negotiations with the position that companies should not form alliances and consortia, that is, they should not unite to sign SPICs. At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade began to promote precisely this idea of combining brands to obtain a synergistic effect many years ago.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak had to intervene in the conflict situation, who created a special working group, invited representatives of all auto companies to it and also expressed a number of his own ideas.

But this did not calm the situation - auto brands complained about newcomers, including Chinese companies that from scratch could count on government support, and about their reluctance to invest too much in R&D and organizing exports.

Despite the careful forecasts from automakers, most of them are preparing many new products for Russia. For example, Volvo Autonews.ru said that they would bring a new Volvo S60 and Volvo V60 Cross Country. Suzuki will launch the updated Vitara SUV and the new Jimny compact SUV.

Next year Skoda will bring the updated Superb and the Karoq crossover to Russia, Volkswagen will begin Russian sales of the Arteon liftback, as well as new modifications of the Polo and Tiguan in 2019. AvtoVAZ will roll out Lada Vesta Sport, Granta Cross and promises several more new products.

I am a happy man. Because it was one of the first (with the factory index FB), the assembly of which had just begun at the plant in St. Petersburg. For this, I had to fly to St. Petersburg and put up with the fact that only camouflaged cars are currently allowed on public roads.

My assessments can hardly be taken as the ultimate truth. I didn’t have much of a ride, the new cars were from a pre-production batch (one with a mileage of about 50 thousand kilometers), and the camouflage, in addition to hiding the contours of the body, also creates a noticeable noise background at high speed. Nevertheless, there are some observations - especially since we managed to jump from to the new one and back.

Has your character changed?

So the big question is: has the character of the new Rio changed? The answer is clear: yes! The retuned electric power steering, new front suspension geometry (in particular, the angle of the wheel rotation axis has been increased by half a degree) and the modernized rear suspension, in which the shock absorbers are almost vertical, have done their job. If the old Rio drives just decently, then the new one has a twist that will clearly please active drivers. The beginner has a better feel for the steering wheel, holds the high-speed straight line more confidently and is more willing to change lanes following the steering wheel turns. Damn it, such revelations have never happened before in inexpensive Kia!

But I won’t over-praise, because not everything is clear. Firstly, it seemed to me that in extreme corners the Rio was too willing to slip into a skid, noticeably squatting on the loaded rear wheel. But this still needs to be double-checked on commercial vehicles. In addition, three other people from the plant were traveling with me, so the load was noticeable.

You have to pay for excitement, and you know what - smoothness. The new Rio is a little harsher, there is a slight itch on the steering wheel (its echoes are also noticeable on the pedals), and the level of road noise has increased slightly. Is this bad? Decide for yourself. For me, a better understanding with the car is more important than a slight loss in comfort.

Another good thing is that the 6-speed automatic transmission has been retuned. The Koreans say that this is a new generation box, although it would be more correct to talk about modernization. On the old Rio 1.6, when driving more or less active, the gas pedal has only two positions: either the entire working stroke, when practically nothing happens, or the “almost to the floor” position, when the automatic transmission suddenly wakes up and frantically pushes down a lower gear. Nervous, tattered ride. But on a new car this relationship is more linear: if you pressed, you accelerated. I pressed harder - the gearbox went another step lower, the car went even faster. More convenient, clearer, more comfortable and ultimately safer.

If we are already talking about units, it’s time to remind you that the new Rio is practically the twin brother of Solaris. That’s why the engines are the same: 1.4 liters (100 hp and 132 N∙m) and 1.6 liters (123 hp and 156 N∙m). Both engines will be combined with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. My choice is 1.6 with a “handle”: a wonderful pair!

Factory people claim that the car has noticeably increased in size, but this is not entirely true. Who will notice the 23 mm increase in length? It can be achieved with other bumpers. By the way, Rio is 5 mm shorter than the new Solaris, although technically the cars are extremely similar. Why? I'm telling you, because of the bumpers.

The wheelbase has increased by 30 mm - up to 2600 mm. Now this is more serious. But here we need to return again to Solaris, which has the same wheelbase - and how could it be different if the “cart” is the same?

The declared ground clearance is 160 mm, which is decent for this class. I didn’t check it, because the cars I had at my disposal were without protection for the engine compartment, and it is this that, as a rule, determines the lowest point. Let’s take a commercial vehicle a little later and look at this issue in detail.

Among other important decisions for our motorists, I would like to note the fuel tank increased to 50 liters (+7 l). The washer reservoir has also become more spacious: previously it was 4-liter, but now its volume is 4.6 liters. This is a small victory, but why wasn’t it immediately increased to 5 liters so that the tank could hold the contents of a standard canister?

In the engine compartment, everything is organized extremely neatly and thoughtfully: easy access to the battery, the neck of the washer fluid reservoir and the oil plug. It’s even convenient to change the light bulbs in the headlights - I checked.

Especially for Russia

Did you notice that I didn’t say a word about the design? There will be many disputes (some will like it, others will not), and I do not want to act as an arbitrator. Let me just say that all the spy photos that have appeared on the Internet so far can be forgotten: our car has its own front bumper - it looks like a combination of the Chinese Kia K2 sedan with bumpers from the European Rio hatchback. Although this is not an entirely accurate description! Our Rio was created specifically for the Russian market, and many components and individual parts were customized to our requirements. If a brake rotor has similar dimensions but different characteristics, is it the same part? I will answer as an engineer: no.

Live Rio looks more interesting than in photographs. The decision to visually combine the rear lights seems to me to be extremely successful. And “boomerangs” in bumpers are quite appropriate. And the interior is absolutely good! The new Rio blurs the line between cars of classes B and C: the quality of finishing will be the envy of other more expensive cars. And it’s good that the Koreans have finally moved away from dubious Asian lines: moderate European severity suits the car.

Although there were some oddities. For example, Koreans sacredly preserve the custom of placing locks for the gas tank flap and trunk at the driver’s feet. Well, let it be, there must be something family.

Rio's equipment is rich. It is clear that there are airbags, a dynamic stabilization system, air conditioning (or climate control), electric windows, heated exterior mirrors, two-stage rear seat heating, a tire pressure monitoring system and ERA-GLONASS. But that is not all. Rio can be equipped with a multimedia system with a 7-inch screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (navigation builds routes taking into account traffic jams), there is a rear view camera and even side lights in turns. And among the special features is a leather interior, which the . It is clear that this is the so-called eco-leather (we simply call it leatherette), but some will want this. I prefer fabric seats - they are more comfortable and pleasant, even in the heat or cold.

What is the price?

At the beginning of my story, I apparently got excited about the “main question.” Clear handling is great, but not everyone is touched by it. But the price interests everyone. And there is still complete uncertainty on this issue.

The Koreans say that sales will begin in the third quarter of this year. And the third quarter - here it is, knocking on the door. July? August? September? No word yet, although August looks like the most likely solution. (In the press release, which the Russian representative office of Kia distributed on June 23 at 13:00, August was confirmed. - Note ed.) Not a word about prices. But you don’t have to be a seer to predict with 99.9% accuracy that the Rio’s price will not be far behind Solaris, prices for which vary from 625 thousand rubles to a little over a million, if we consider a fully packaged car.

Will there be a crossover?

And a few more words for those who drive crossovers or are still only dreaming of all-wheel drive. All talk about a small Kia crossover can be safely curtailed - we won’t have one in the near future. A redesigned Creta with Kia emblems will only cause damage to the brand, since everyone will perceive such a car as secondary. And it’s not a fact that now in our market there is room for two identical crossovers: Creta can be sold in large quantities, but two identical cars will not find twice as many customers - internal cannibalism is inevitable, which the Koreans do not want.

The trunk lid still opens from the passenger compartment using a floor-mounted “pull”. Expensive versions provide contactless access: you need to stand in the immediate vicinity of the trunk with the key in your pocket for a few seconds - and the “casket” will open.

Moreover, the plant's capabilities are limited - it is already working at full capacity: five days a week, three shifts. This is the most efficient auto production in the country, but its capacity is almost completely exhausted. Kia can only produce about a hundred thousand cars a year here - and the question is how to distribute this volume between different models. It is not economically profitable to produce two completely different cars in this situation.

Do you understand what I mean? In addition to the sedan, in a few months the Rio hatchback will hit the assembly line, which, if everything goes according to plan, will be offered in an elevated “crossover” version. Together, the sedan and hatchback will select the entire production quota. So what is next…

Then everything will depend on you, dear readers. You are not only readers, but also buyers! If in the foreseeable future, along with the growth of the market (and this is expected), sales of Kia cars in Russia rise to at least 200 thousand per year, the Koreans will have a serious reason to think about building a new plant, since there is a site near the existing Hyundai plant - it was envisaged initially . Go for it. Perhaps the new Rio will help.
