Do-it-yourself thermos: manufacturing instructions. How to make a thermos with your own hands at home How to make a thermos at home

Make it yourself from a glass bottle and scrap materials

Glass bottle with a capacity of 0.5 liters. Carefully wrap with foil, glossy side inward. The use of a plastic bottle is not allowed, since the plastic is deformed when in contact with hot water.

Plastic bottle, capacity 2 liters. cut it into two parts and insert a glass bottle into it. Cover the cut line with tape. Containers can be of a different size, the main thing is that the glass bottle fits freely into the plastic one.

We make a hole in a plastic bottle. We introduce polyurethane foam there, which can be replaced with foam rubber. After 8 hours, the thermos will be ready.

Glass bottle, foil and electrical tape

Carefully wrap the glass bottle with foil. Wrap the top with electrical tape. It is better to use black electrical tape.

Container and foam

Crumble the foam into any small box. Place the container in the middle of the box. It is advisable that the foam completely covers the container.

Foam chips can be replaced with sawdust or polyurethane foam.

Container and fabric that holds heat well

Wool, fleece, thermal underwear, tapestry, flannel, gabardine, gomespoon, jean, drape, tweed, footer and tartan retain heat well.

The fabric can be replaced with other insulation, such as a blanket.

Wrap the container with hot contents in a warm cloth, preferably in several layers, and it can keep warm for up to 3 days.

Container and available insulation materials

We wrap the container in polyethylene or cellophane (for example, a torn bag), then in thick fabric (ideally cotton), then in foil and finally in wrapping paper. One or more insulation can be omitted to the detriment of rapid heat loss.

Container and paper

You can use old newspaper as paper. Wrap them around the container in several layers.

Cardboard box for juice, milk, etc.

Tetrapacks are ideal for hot drinks. Plus, such packaging takes longer to heat up than glass.

When going winter fishing, hiking, or going for a long walk, take warm drinks and food with you. Learn how to make a thermos, wood chip stove.

How to make a thermos?

If you are going for a walk in nature in winter, take some hot tea with you. If you don’t have anything to pour it into, see how you can make such a vessel from available materials. You can use what is available, using plastic or glass bottles as a basis.

If you like this thermos, then you will need:
  • two plastic bottles of different sizes;
  • foam;
  • foil;
  • scissors;
  • scotch;
  • yarn;
  • hook.

Wrap the small bottle in foil. This material has a glossy and matte side. We wrap the foil so that the glossy one is inside, this will help retain heat better. Cut off the neck and bottom of a large bottle. Wrap the small one with foam rubber, insert it into the larger one through the lower hole of the one.

Attach the cut bottom of the larger container to its place, attach with tape. Now you need to wrap foil on top of this structure.

Knit a piece of thread to the size of the decorated large bottle. Tie at the top with the attached cord. If you don't know how to knit, sew on a piece of thick fabric. How to knit and sew a cover for a thermos will be described below.

And this is far from the only way that will tell you how to make a thermos from plastic bottles.

To implement the second idea, you will need:

  • 2 bottles - with a capacity of 1 and 0.5 liters;
  • foil;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • scotch;
We also start by wrapping a small bottle with several layers of foil, the shiny side inward. After cutting off the bottom of a large bottle, place a small one in it, place the bottom in place, and secure with tape. This must be done carefully so that when you fill the space between two bottles with polyurethane through the upper part, the mass does not flow out of the lower hole.

Don't apply too much polyurethane. After squeezing out a certain amount from the plastic nozzle placed on the can, wait, as the mass will increase in volume.

Let the composition dry, then trim off the excess at the top with a knife. The thermos is ready.

For the third idea, in addition to two bottles of different sizes, foil, and tape, you will also need foam rubber.

Like the first two containers, it can be used not only to maintain an elevated temperature of the drink, but also for chilled liquids. This thermos is indispensable in the summer.

Cut a large bottle into 3 parts, as shown in the photo. Wrap the small one first with foil, then with foam rubber, and again with foil on top. Place the bottom and then the middle part of a large bottle on it. Connect the container elements with tape.

Now check out how to make a good thermos from a glass bottle. But you will need ones with screw caps. You can buy juice in such a container and use it a second time.

DIY homemade thermos from glass containers

To make one, take:
  • glass bottle with screw cap;
  • kitchen towels;
  • scotch;
  • electrical tape;
  • scissors.
Wrap the bottle in 3-5 layers of paper kitchen towel. To make this easier, secure it with tape. Trim the edge and secure it with a piece of tape.

But don't cut it, wrap this black electrical tape around the entire bottle. The next layer will consist of foil. Screw the electrical tape over it so that each lower turn overlaps the upper one a little.

Here's another way to make a good thermos. Take:
  • a glass bottle and a slightly larger plastic bottle;
  • foil;
  • black electrical tape;
  • scissors;
  • cotton wool;
  • cotton fabric.

Cut off the neck of a large plastic bottle; it will not be needed. Next, this container needs to be divided almost in half with scissors. Cover sharp edges with electrical tape to avoid cutting yourself while working.

Wrap two parts of a plastic bottle with foil, and wrap a small glass bottle with cotton cloth. Secure materials using electrical tape.

Place the small bottle blank in the bottom of a plastic container wrapped in foil. Between these two containers, using a wooden skewer, place cotton wool.

Place the top of a plastic bottle with foil on the structure and wrap the outside of the thermos tightly with tape.

How to keep heat in a food container?

Those who love winter fishing know how good it is to get hot sandwiches or warm hot dogs when you are hungry and enjoy them on a snow-covered reservoir. It is not difficult to construct a container that retains heat. Do this if you have:
  • a piece of polyurethane foil insulation;
  • plastic jar with a lid of the required size;
  • scotch;
  • scissors.
Cut a rectangle from the insulation and cover the sides of the jar with it. Place it on the remaining polyurethane foil sheet and outline the bottom. Cut out this circle. Attach it from the bottom to the sides with tape.

Do not cut this tape. Apply tape over the entire surface of the insulating layer. To keep food hot for as long as possible, attach the lid to the insulation, outline it, and cut it out with a margin. Then it will be possible to cover the sides of the lid with this material and secure it with tape.

Before you put food in the container, wrap it in foil.

How to sew or knit a thermos case?

It's time to reveal the secret of this. If you go for a walk with your child in the cold season, make a thermos with a dispenser, as described above. Then the drink will be warm and will remain at this temperature for a long time. But it is necessary to tie a cover on the vessel.

For it you will need:

  • dark and light threads;
  • hook;
  • scissors.
Cast on 5 air loops, connect them into a ring, making another loop. Tie this blank with single crochets, you will get 9 of them - this is the first row. The next row will alternate between one single crochet and one increase stitch. The third is done in the same way, but two single crochets and one increase are knitted. In each subsequent row you need to increase the number of single crochets by one loop, the increase also remains in the amount of 1 piece.

This way you will knit 7 rows. To finish the bottom, work the 8th row in single crochets without adding a stitch. In this case, the hook must be inserted into the back wall of the loop from the previous row.

Also, without adding loops, you need to crochet the cover further. To do this, we use the “front relief column” pattern, alternating with the “wrong column”. We use single crochets and perform 10 rows like this. Now you need to change the dark thread to a light one, perform 6 rows with single crochets.

Take the dark yarn again and use it to knit 7 rows of embossed double crochets. Then work six rows with a light thread in single crochets. Next, there are 7 rows of embossed double crochets using dark thread.

It remains to complete two rows with single crochet and one with double crochet, using light yarn.
Tie a chain with a blue thread and pass it through the top between the posts.

Now you need to put the crocheted cover on the bottle, tighten the lacing, and decorate it with ties.

See how to sew a cover on a bottle so that it turns into a thermos. It is very convenient for keeping baby food warm. But you can sew one onto a regular glass or plastic container, thereby turning it into a thermos.

To work you will need:
  • felt;
  • cotton fabric;
  • scissors;
  • needle;
  • threads;
  • rags;
  • polyethylene;
  • felt.
The fabric structure will be four-layer, so you need to cut blanks of the same shape from felt; polyethylene; rags; cotton fabrics. They will be rectangular. The size of these parts is easy to determine; to do this, just measure the distance from the cap to the bottom of the bottle, add 1–2 cm. Reduce the layers of polyethylene and rags on two opposite sides by 1 cm.

Also cut out 4 circular pieces that fit the bottom of the bottle. It is better to immediately iron the edges of the workpieces to make it easier to stitch the layers together. Which is what you will do.

Sew a zipper on one and the other side of the four-layer fabric. This can be done either on a typewriter or by hand. Sew the bottom on one and the other side of the resulting tube.

You can decorate the cover with felt, sewing, cut out butterflies or other figures.

Do-it-yourself camping stove-wood chipper

If you need to quickly cook food and have a log and a chainsaw available, then make a design like this.

Using a saw, make 4 cuts, half the depth of the log or slightly lower.

Place newspapers in the crevices; you can pour a small amount of lighter fluid on them.

Light the newspapers and then set up a frying pan or pot of water to cook the food.

But this is a one-time design. If you want to make a reusable one, then look at how a wood chip stove is made. It can be made on the basis of cans or use a metal device for drying spoons and forks. This one is sold, for example, in Ikea stores. First, let's look at a low-cost option.

To make one, you will need:
  • a large tin can with a diameter of 15, a height of 18 cm and an evenly cut lid from it;
  • two 800 ml jars and a cut-out lid;
  • the next jar is needed to make a shelf for the stove from it;
  • metal scissors;
  • marker;
  • glass wool;
  • gloves.
Take the lid from a small jar, place it on the side of the large one, and outline it with a marker.

Cut this hole with a power tin cutter or tin snips.

If you use a special tool for cutting metal, be sure to wear glasses, work with gloves, and follow safety precautions.

Place a small jar in front of you and attach the same lid to it. Trace and cut out a hole. This is what your design will look like. You will place the small jar inside the large one, and pass the second small one through the holes of both.

Measure the distance between the large and small jar, cut a ring of this size from the lid of the large jar. Make slits in the top of a large container. Place glass wool between the large and small jars, place the cut out ring on top, and bend the edges of the large jar.

Now we are working with another small jar, which has not yet been decorated. From its side, cut out a shelf, the edges of which need to be installed in two slots in a small pipe jar. This shelf is needed for feeding branches and wood chips into the oven.

This is what the finished structure will look like.

The wood chip stove is ready, you can put the pot on to boil water for tea, cook porridge, pasta or fry potatoes.

If something remains unclear to you, look at the diagram for creating such a design.

But cans don't last long. If you want to make something that will last for a long time, then use a metal container to dry cutlery.

You need to cut out a door on the side, as shown in the photo.

Insert 4 screws through the lower holes and secure them with bolts. You made the legs for the camp stove. That's it, you can put wood chips inside and light the structure. If the vessel is larger than the diameter of the stove, then it will fit well on top.

If you want to place a small container, then install two parallel metal rods through the slots of the stove at the top. You will place the container on them.

Camping stoves can even be made from a metal mug. If you want to see the manufacturing process, watch the video.

How another wood chip stove is constructed is described in the following story.

After watching the third one, you will learn how to make a thermos with your own hands.

A thermos is a special device for liquid products that uses several layers of heat-insulating materials that retain heat, maintaining the temperature of hot contents or preventing cold liquids from heating up. If you have some common materials and some free time, you can make your own thermos as a teaching project for a physics class or for everyday use.

Steps

Simple thermos

    Choose a bottle. You can use any plastic or glass bottle that has a re-sealable cap. The volume of the bottle should be sufficient to hold the portion of drink you need.

    • All other things being equal, glass has better thermal insulation properties than plastic. Plastic, on the other hand, is cheaper and easier to work with, yet its insulating properties are sufficient to be used for this project. Also, don't forget that you need a bottle with a screw cap, and glass bottles often don't have screw caps.
  1. Wrap the bottle in paper kitchen towels. Unfold the towel into a long strip and place it on the work surface. Place the bottle in the center of the sheet on one edge of the tape and gradually wrap the bottle in the towels, wrapping the sheet around the container.

    • Your canvas should consist of several individual pieces of paper connected to each other. You need to take enough material to wrap the bottle in at least three layers.
    • To make the wrapping process less complicated, we advise you to attach the edge of the linen to the bottle with tape before you start wrapping the container in towels.
    • Try to keep the bottle in a level position at all times while working. This will ensure that the paper towels are evenly wrapped around the container.
    • When finished, secure the free edge of the canvas with a large piece of duct tape to secure it.
  2. Wrap the container in aluminum foil. Spread a large piece of aluminum foil over your work surface. Just like you did with the paper towels, center the bottle on one edge of the paper and gradually roll it up, wrapping the aluminum foil around the bottle.

    • The sheet of aluminum foil should be the same length as the sheet of paper towels you used earlier, or better yet, a little longer.
    • To begin, tape the edge of the aluminum foil to the top layer of paper towels. This will help you fix the foil in one position. This will greatly simplify the process of winding the foil.
    • As you work, constantly align the foil on the surface of the bottle. In addition, make sure that the bottle is always perpendicular to the canvas during the wrapping process, then the layers will be even.
    • If the foil breaks during operation, secure the tear with tape and continue wrapping the bottle.
    • Use tape to secure the free edge of the foil when you finish wrapping it around the bottle.
  3. Trim off the excess. Using scissors, trim the edges of the paper towels and foil that extend below the bottom of the bottle and above the neck. Make sure you cut enough material off the top so that you can easily drink from the neck of the bottle.

    • When you trim the excess material, remember that the paper towels should not be visible anywhere under the foil.
  4. Wrap the bottle with electrical tape. Attach the edge of the duct tape to the top of the bottle, directly on or slightly above the edge of the foil. Wrap the bottle with electrical tape in a downward spiral, completely covering the entire surface to the very bottom of the bottle.

    • Even though the foil can stick around the bottle on its own without using duct tape, you shouldn't skip this step because a layer of duct tape will make your cover more secure.
    • It is best to opt for black electrical tape, as it creates an additional insulating layer for your homemade thermos.
  5. Check the thermos. The production of the thermos is completed. To check how efficiently your thermos works, pour hot water into it. Measure the temperature of the water in the thermos as soon as you pour it, and then check the temperature every 30 minutes.

    • If you are satisfied with the heat retention efficiency of your thermos, then you can use it for its intended purpose. If it seems to you that the water is cooling too quickly, you can add additional thermal insulation layers or use another method of making a thermos.

    More complex thermos

    1. Choose two bottles. One bottle should easily fit into another. The inner bottle should be made of glass or plastic, and only a plastic bottle will suit you as the outer bottle. Don't forget to make sure the inner bottle has a screw cap.

      • For the outer (larger) bottle, you will need to cut the top off, which is why a plastic bottle will work and a glass bottle will not.
      • In most cases, glass has better thermal insulation properties than plastic. That's why, if you can find a glass bottle with a screw cap, you're better off using it as the smaller, inner container of a thermos. But it is worth remembering that the presence of a screw cap is a necessary condition, therefore, if you do not find a glass bottle with such a cap, then you should take a plastic container with the required cap.
      • Regular one and two liter bottles work fine for this project in most cases. If you are not satisfied with containers of this volume, you can take others at your discretion. In this case, you need to take two bottles of different sizes, so that the smaller bottle fits in the larger one and there is still enough free space around it.
    2. Cut off the top of the larger bottle. Using sharp scissors, carefully cut off the very top of a large bottle, making a cut just below the neck of the bottle. The curved part of the top of the wall should remain intact.

      • Please note that this is the part of the bottle where the plastic is usually the thickest. For this reason, you need to be especially careful when you make the cut.
      • The resulting hole should be large enough to fit the neck of the inner (smaller) bottle through.
      • We advise you to apply a layer of thick electrical tape to the sharp edge of the cut to avoid accidental cuts while working.
    3. Cut a large bottle into two almost equal parts. Lay the large bottle on its side and carefully cut it down the middle so that the bottom is only slightly larger than the top.

      • The cut must be made across the bottle, and not along its length.
      • Cut straight along the side wall of the bottle. Your cut should be parallel to the work surface all the way around the bottle.
      • Be sure to apply an extra layer of tape to the sharp edges of the cuts on the top and bottom. This will protect your hands from accidental cuts and scratches while working.
    4. Wrap a large bottle in aluminum foil. Wrap a layer of aluminum foil around the inside of the top and bottom halves of the bottle. The foil layer should be slightly wider than the sides of the bottle, so that the excess can be folded around the sharp edges.

      • Metal has thermal insulating properties, therefore, aluminum foil laid along the inner wall of a larger bottle will create an additional insulating layer. You will only need to install one layer of foil as you will be using other insulating materials to keep the heat inside your structure.
    5. Wrap the smaller bottle in cloth. Spread a layer of clean cotton cloth over your work surface. Place the smaller bottle on the edge of the fabric and slowly turn it, gradually wrapping the fabric over the bottle.

      • Note that instead of fabric, you can use other insulating materials, such as fiberglass.
      • If you have chosen fabric, you should take cotton material or any other material that can retain heat well. Avoid light, airy fabrics such as chiffon, as they do not have sufficient insulating properties.
      • You will likely need to secure the edge of the fabric to the bottle with tape to prevent it from slipping off.
    6. Place the smaller bottle inside the larger bottle, centered. Place the bottom of the smaller bottle on the bottom of the larger bottle, centered. Attach two bottles to each other using hot glue applied using a hot glue gun.

      • Let the glue dry completely before moving on to the next step.
    7. Fill the space with cotton balls. Push the cotton balls in until they fill the remaining space between the walls of the outer and inner bottles. Press the balls down as hard as possible to fill the gap as tightly as possible.

    8. Place the two halves of the larger bottle together. Place the top half over the bottom half so that they overlap each other. Insert the neck of the inner bottle into the top hole of the outer bottle, pushing it over the neck.

      • If you need to add filler to the top, work with large tweezers or a chopstick. You will need to insert the pieces of cotton wool into the middle cut when the halves are already pressed against each other, but not yet completely pushed in.
      • Since the diameter of the top and bottom halves of the bottle is the same, you will need to lightly press the cut edge of the bottom half inward while pushing the edge of the top half down overlapping. Be patient as this step will require a lot of time and effort.
      • If necessary, make a small cut (1.25 cm) along the edges of the top and bottom half of the outer bottle. This will make the plastic more pliable and will help you join the edges of both halves more easily.
    9. Wrap the outside of the larger bottle with duct tape. Use electrical tape to connect the bottom edge of the top half of the bottle to the bottom of the bottle. Wrap the outside of the larger bottle so that the tape covers all sides of the bottle.

      • Insulating tape has three functions:
        • Firstly, it connects the two halves of the bottle, preventing your thermos from falling apart during use.
        • Secondly, electrical tape has heat-insulating properties, thereby making the thermos more reliable.
        • Thirdly, it creates an outer covering, hiding the “insides” of the thermos, thereby giving your product a neater appearance.
        • Always cut away from you when using scissors or a razor. Never cut towards yourself.
        • Make sure that the bottle you used to make a thermos has been thoroughly washed beforehand.

Every fisherman in cold weather while fishing dreams of hot tea or coffee to warm up a little, but it often happens that there is no hot water at hand due to the lack of a thermos. In a thermos you can keep not only hot liquid to keep you warm in the cold, but also cold liquid to enjoy cold water in the summer heat. In this article we will talk about how to make a thermos at home, using only available materials.

Necessary materials

To make a thermos, the following materials are needed:

  • foil;
  • plastic lemonade bottles;
  • scotch;
  • thermal insulation material.

The design of a homemade thermos is simple and it works on a simple principle: the first bottle is the body of the thermos itself, and inside this bottle there is another bottle, slightly smaller in size - it acts as a flask where the liquid is located. There should be thermal insulation between these bottles. Insulation or pumped air can be used as thermal insulation.

Before you start making a thermos, you need to decide on the size of the bottle and the amount of liquid it holds so that you have enough water for the entire fishing trip. For a future homemade thermos, it is better to take ordinary lemonade bottles - they are durable and reliable.

For a small thermos for one person, bottles for a 0.5 liter flask are suitable - it will be on the inside, and for the outside you need to use a 1 liter bottle. If you want to make a thermos a little larger, then you need to take bottles of a slightly larger volume - 1 liter for the flask, and 2 liters for the body. When making a thermos for group fishing, bottles of even larger volume are needed: 2.5 liters for the flask and a 5 liter bottle for the body.

When going on a hike or spending the night with friends in nature, or being on a long trip without the opportunity to stop at a cafe, you want to drink hot tea or coffee. And in order for the drink to remain at the desired temperature, you need a thermos. At home, you can make such a device no worse than store-bought ones.

Therefore, we invite you to watch a video that shows the process of creating a thermos.

To create a thermos we need to prepare:
- polyurethane foam;
- small plastic bottle (0.5 l);
- large plastic bottle (1.0 l);
- food foil;
- scotch;
- knife

First of all, we need to carefully wrap the smaller bottle with foil. So that the shiny part of the foil (its outer part) is on the inside, i.e. came into contact with the surface of the bottle. Wrap the bottle in 5-10 layers of foil. Carefully press it with your hands to the plastic.

Of the entire bottle, only the cap should remain outside the foil; the bottom should also be carefully wrapped.

Now we cut the second bottle into two parts using a knife. We insert the workpiece inside.

And now we carefully glue the two parts of the large bottle with tape. Do not skimp on the tape and tape both parts as carefully as possible so that later, when filling the space, the polyurethane does not start to crawl out from under the tape.

Now we cut a small hole at the bottom of the bottle. So that you can fill the free space with polyurethane. You should not make the hole too large so that when filling the polyurethane does not start to come out. It’s better to immediately calculate and make a hole exactly for the nozzle from the spray can.

We put a special plastic nozzle on the can of polyurethane and fix it. And we begin to fill the space between the walls of the outer bottle and the inner one.

We leave our product to dry completely. If any excess still comes out from under the tape or holes in the nozzles, remove them until they dry.

If you are making a thermos at home, then it is best to choose glass bottles for the internal structure, since they are more resistant to hot liquids and also retain heat longer.
